The 80's Playthings

I was a child growing up in the early 80's. I lived in bright tracksuits and red leg warmers with reindeers on, and tried my best to keep up with the the craze of Roller skating - which was tough as i could not roller skate, many a grazed knee.
I love toys,  and as a girl i loved dolls especially..

Sindy was my favourite nowadays she looks more like Barbie, but at the time i loved Sindy. Wide eyed, pouty mouth and long hair perfect for me to play hairdresser on ! :)
As part of my fabulous online course "Paint Your Story" with Mindy Lacefield  we were given the project of drawing a favourite doll from Childhood.

So of course i drew Sindy... incorporating the wonderfully freeing mark making and scribbles mix media background. I choose bright fun colours and drew Sindy quite loosely.
It got me thinking about the Toys i loved growing up in the 80's. I was a huge fan of anything and everything from the US and Cabbage Patch Kids hit the UK market, i went crazy for these dolls and my sweet mum went to London and queued to get me one.

Funny looking things really, but i worshipped this doll, it was quite like this one in the picture and i called it "Altheda"

I loved Garbage Pail too and collected a lot of the cards, i was dazzled by the imagination of these characters and they where slightly weird and i love weird stuff

I find it inspiring to realise that inspiration for your art and illustration can come from the things we once loved in Childhood, they toys and crazes long forgotten but at the time filled up our imagination.

I would really love to hear what your favourite toys were and from what era ?or what craze you where really into ?

Be great to read your replies.

Lots of love and 80's inspiration :)

I was a child of the 80's too, my brother was all neon shorts and sweatbands whilst I rocked the pale pink knickerbockers and frilly shirts lol

My favourite toys were strawberry shortcake and care bears, but I did love my sindy doll too, I also had a furry toy thing called 'chiggles'(I think) which I loved!!

Smelly erasers, stationary sets and scratch and sniff stickers were my best friends too, 'paperweight' was my favourite shop in town ;o)

I think working in paperweight or a bookshop would be my perfect job if I didn't paint lol

Can't believe you worked there, we must have seen each other lots of times before (I never did stop going in there lol) and only found each other in blogland....kinda weird eh?

Oh yes! I grew up in the 80's too and I sure do remember those black lace gloves! In fact... I still may have a pair of those! Sweatbands, hologram stickers... lol, it's all coming back to me now :) I was a huge fan of everything Jim Henson-related: Fraggle Rock, Muppets, Labyrinth and so on. I loved Care Bears and My Little Pony, Johnny Depp in 21 Jump Street (hahaha), Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan, neon colours, Star Trek, He-man dolls, Transformers (I was a bit of a tomboy, I'm afraid). Mmmm, scratch and sniff stickers... Oh, and I looooved my Popple (was it called that? A fluffy plushie that could be made into a ball!) Thanks for the memories, Heidi! xxx

Oh I loved the Garbage pail kids, I remember being curled up on the sofa ill, and off school, and my mum popped over the road, to the local shop that also rented videos (before the days of Blockbuster), so she could get me the Garbage Pail Kids film to watch... again :)

I mostly played with hand me down Sindy dolls, a princess Barbie, Carebears (I think the Movie was my first trip to the cinema ever), My little ponies, and get-along-gang. :)
